Homemade Butter Making—Jar-Shake Method

Homemade Butter Making—Jar-Shake Method

I awoke this morning and decided to make homemade butter. After a quick read through of several online how-to’s, I was confident that I could do it.

Using a recycled clean salsa jar and matching lid, I filled my newly donned butter jar-shake “machine” with heavy organic cream from the big container I get at Costco. I say “filled”, but really the jar was about 75% full.

Time: 6:21 a.m. I began the jar-shake. Quickly I realized that I would also benefit this morning from a natural arm work-out that would include wrists, forearms, biceps, triceps, and shoulders.

What to expect: Vigorous jar-shake method began to produce changes of a thicker cream at about 10 mins. Definite thickness transformation.  Whilst the jar-shake, I texted my son, who is away at college, sharing with him that I was making homemade butter. He has an 8 a.m. class so this was not intrusively early for him.

6:41 a.m. Fluffy cream developed. Like a whipped consistency. Observation and taste—like a homemade whipped cream without the added sugar.

6:50 a.m. Definite transition to a light whipped “butter”, but firmer, with liquid sloshing around it during the jar-shake. This liquid was buttermilk forming.

7:05 a.m. Taste test. Yup it’s butter! (No salt) Dumped the contents of the salsa jar into a bowl.

7:10 a.m.  BUTTERMILK Poured off some of the buttermilk-like liquid into juice glasses. Used a spoon to ladle the rest of it from the butter bowl into the glasses. TASTE? It tasted more like cream but with a more watery consistency? Obviously good, but not quite a store bought flavor of buttermilk.

GET OUT! I Made Butter! It is a beautiful swirly butter that actually tastes like butter—because it is!

After a light toasting of whole grain bread, I smeared a generous portion of my successful jar-shake butter onto the crisp. Wow. Delightful.

The Renaissance Woman can do pretty much anything she sets her mind to do. My Finnish grandfather always said,

"Pietarinpoika do what we want. Others do what they can."

Be Pietarinpoika. Be the Renaissance of today.
